Drinking Other People's Lives Away

I have to agree with Atrios (who himself was responding to a post and comments on Matthew Yglesias' site) that lowering the drinking age to 19 would be a good idea. College students drink. There's no parental supervision in college, and there aren't enough university staff for them to effectively enfoce it, so they don't bother either. A 19 year old drinking age would let college students drink ('cos the 18 year old freshmen will buddy up with the local sophomores...) yet keep it still very illegal for high school students to drink (when they should be doing their homework anyway). College bars admit people either at age 18 or 19 anyway, so it shouldn't really matter there - if you know someone there, you'll get drinks. Atrios suggests limiting drinking under 21 to those who don't have driver's licenses as a way to curb teenage drunk driving. My opinion on the issue would be to limit drinking to those who don't own a car, as a driver's license isn't that much good without one.
