Contact Your Senators
Pres. Bush has nominated his White House Counsel, Alberto Gonzales, for the post of Attourney General. Among other nasty things, Gonzales OKed a memo distorting the definition of torture to make it nearly meaningless and he supports the position that as Commander-in-Chief, the President can ignore the constitution. You can find a longer arguement against him here. This is a dangerous man who has no business being given the job of safeguarding the rights of American citizens. Contact your senators and tell them to vote against making Gonzales the Attorney General. Even if he is given the post, at least your senator will be on record against it. Here's what I sent my senators:
Sens. Durbin and Obama,
I am horrified by the legal positions taken by White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales. He actively condones torture and posits that the President can ignore the constitution. As such, I strongly urge you to vote against his appointment as Attourney General. Surely, a better and ethical lawyer can be found to serve our nation as Attourney General than the likes of Mr. Gonzales.
UPDATE: Kos is keeping track of everyone who opposes Gonzales (same link as above), and apparently some lefty groups are giving out stuff now just for having a rational opinion.
