Not Very Nice
One of the many drawbacks to having comments on a popular blog is that one can fall prey to comment spam, wherein certain nefarious characters can target programs to put links to porn, snake oil, and get rich quick schemes in comment posts on your blog. Those of us with Haloscan are shielded somewhat by this as our comments aren't hosted on our own servers. For those, like Archpundit, whose comments are hosted on his own server, such attacks of comment spam can do nasty things, like crash the server. Archpundit had already tried to negate some of the worst of it, by requiring a thirty second delay between comments and requiring one to click through a preview screen before posting the comment. Usually such tactics work, though it appears that whoever was attacking the blog has a more sophisticated program that can deal with such things. As Archpundit's blog is a decent source of Illinois political information his absence will be duly missed and we'll hope for his blog's speedy return.
