Back Up And Running, For Now
I've done a clean install of Windows XP and have my internet connection back for the moment. I say "for the moment" because of some weird things that have been happening with my reinstall of everything. I installed windows without a hitch, then threw SP2 and all the critical updates at it. I downloaded Ad Aware from URHNet, ran that, then downloaded UIUC's preferred antivirus program, McAfee Virusscan Enterprize v8.0i. I tried to update said antivirus, but it wouldn't update completely. After letting my suitemate, the local NetTech, have a crack at it, he got fed up and told me to download AVG Antivirus Free instead, saying that it wouldn't screw up like McAfee was. I installed that on my computer and found out that, lo and behold, the install file for McAfee, uiuc_virusscam_80i.exe, had a little trojan on it called "BackDoor.Small.2.AH". Hmmm, I wonder why McAfee wasn't updating? Maybe Mr. Trojan was screwing with it. Anyhow, I'm reporting it to URHNet and letting them deal with it. Serves them right for giving me a trojan...
UPDATE: After I was able to remove the trojan by deleting a few files, I've decided to wait to tell the powers that be until I can tell my suitemate about it first.
EXTRA SPECIAL UPDATE: I spoke with the suitemate, and he said that he wasn't worried since the installer executable messes with the registry to do what it does. He was more surprised that McAfee didn't have an uninstall anywhere yet was still working, though. I should count my blessings, I guess, and just be thankful that my net access is back at this point.
