Someone's Not Paying Attention
In yet another reason why I don't read the opinions section of the DI too often, I ran across this letter urging the DI to prod the administration to appeal the NCAA ruling. Go read it, it's short.
Back? Good. Such a letter would be excusable if it came from a freshman; since it came from a supersenior I'm going to rip it apart. First off, anyone should know that the DI editors, as a group, tend to be intelligent about most things and therefore lean liberal. They've done a decent job of not sitting in either camp too much. It should be apparent that the DI won't take such a stance. Secondly, this isn't a matter of "autonomy." It's a matter of us not doing the right thing, respecting Native Americans who've asked us to stop. Thirdly, as foleyma recently observed, Florida State actually has the blessing of the Seminole tribe. Utah is currently waiting on a written confirmation of their verbal endorsement from the Utes. UIUC has no chance in hell of getting such an endorsement and as such our situation is completely different.
If you're going to be pro-Chief and open your mouth about it, at least be well-informed. Otherwise you look ignorant in addition to being backwards.
