Want Some Cheese With Your Whine, Mr. BOT Chair?
One of the disadvantages to going home for summer break is that I'm less connected to the UofI and Champaign-Urbana communities than those who stay there all year. As such, an Old Guy beat me to commenting on the recent News-Gazette story in which University of Illinois Board of Trustees Chairman Lawrence Eppley cries foul over the NCAA's recent ruling on the Chief to USA Today. Why USA Today? I don't know - it's not like most non-UIUC people don't already think us backward for still having our Native American mascot anyway. Beyond that, I think that Old Guy has one very good point on the whole issue:
All the BOT has done for the last few years is stall while attempting to placate the big bucks contributors who demand they retain the sad halftime minstrel show. The BOT has spent money and endless hours debating all in an attempt to stall and waste time. The board did so because they were too concerned over the political backlash that'll occur if they themselves removed the Chief, especially since it would be politically impossible to restore him once he was removed. Now that the NCAA has made their decision for them and given them an outside scapegoat, the board should be more than happy to comply with the ruling and finally end the debate. Personally, I think that Eppley's bluster is either a ruse to keep the pro-Chief crowd's energy directed against the NCAA rather than the BOT. Either that, or he's just whiney because the NCAA had the balls to do what he and the board wouldn't for the past fifteen years.
