Assault On MY Common Sense

Even though the OBO et. al., love to decry the Daily Illini's supposed liberal bias, the DI came out today opposing a state-wide assault weapons ban. Included in the editorial was this piece of tripe:

More than a year ago, legislatures in Washington D.C. let the federal assault weapons ban expire for a good reason - it didn't work.

One might think this, if one hadn't lived through the past five years. However, those of us with brains remember that the assault weapons ban was allowed to die by the GOP, which controlled (and still controls) both houses of congress and the White House. The GOP let it die not because of any supposed lack of effectiveness, but because the GOP is beholden to the NRA. Thing is, the NRA loves the second half of the Second Amendment, but can never seem to remember the first bit about keeping a well-maintained militia. Joe Civilian will never need an assault rifle. Ever. Yet because the NRA has a fetish for all things that go boom, they opposed the ban and their GOP puppets happily did their bidding. That's what happened, not this "it was ineffective, so let's not renew it" crap that the author of the editorial wants to pretend was the case.
