Fun And Games 'Til Someone Gets Killed
Via Elia Diodati of e pur si muove comes word that a UIUC alumna was killed in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Wright and Healey during Unofficial St. Patrick's Day. (WICD doesn't have permalinks, currently the story is here).
The driver of a motorcycle crashed the vehicle around 11:55pm Friday night at the intersection of Wright and Healey Streets in Champaign. Champaign Police Department officials say Caroline Yoon, 22 years old, was the passenger of a motorcycle and fell off of the bike. Four hours later, a report states she was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Room.
[snip]
Yoon received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, is from Glenview, Illinois and was currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania.
Samuel Park, 23 years old, was the driver of the motorcycle. He has been arrested under initial charges of Driving Under the Influence. Park posted a one thousand dollar bond around two-30 Saturday morning.
Illinois State Police investigators were called to the scene to reconstruct the accident. The accident is still under investigation, and according to Champaign Police officials further charges may be forthcoming. It'll be irresponsible to point fingers until the investigation's complete, but I'm sure that people will try. I don't think this event'll be the end of Unofficial - it's too ingrained in UIUC bar culture at the moment - but maybe this'll cause some people to reconsider their drinking habits. Maybe. Right.
UPDATE, 1250 Monday: The DI has a story on the incident, without any new information. They haven't updated their webpage yet, though, so I can't link to it.
