Giving H.G. Wells Too Much Credit
SPOILER WARNING!
As you all should know, the Martians in War of the Worlds have no immune systems, because they'd long ago eliminated the bacterial causes of disease from their home planet, which is why they died after a week or so on Earth.
Now, as anyone with half a biologically-minded brain will know, our global ecosystem absolutely depends on microorganisms. Without them, the macroorganisms wouldn't stand a chance - the bottoms of every food chain would be gone, especially the ocean chains, and there'd be nothing to fix nitrogen for the plants (and, thus, us animals) to use.
So perhaps the Martians destroyed their global microorganismal ecosystem, and that's why their planet was dying, hence their invasion and resulting doom.
Yeah right, I know.
