No, I'm not talking about the stupidity that is Unofficial St. Patrick's Day. Instead, I want to highlight a story in today's Daily Illini about recycling batteries. They're haz-mat and aren't supposed to be thrown out, so the Union and Students for Environmental Concerns have set up drop-off locations in the Union for recycling them.

There are two drop-off locations, one in the southwest corner of the Union near Serendipity and one in the basement near the food court and bowling alley.

The Union and Students for Environmental Concerns implemented the program because more and more batteries and ink cartridges are thrown away improperly, which is posing a threat to Champaign-Urbana landfills and the environment.

"They're relatively toxic in terms of once they break open the stuff starts leaking out," Wright said. "So we really thought recycling batteries was a service that would be good to provide for students so that they know they have a safe, reliable place they can deposit their batteries and know they'll be recycled and not end up in a landfill."

Now I'll be able to offload my huge-ass bag of spent batteries. The thing must weigh four pounds by now.
