Referenda Endorsements
Campus elections are coming up, and with them three referenda are up for consideration by the student body.
The first up is an either $15 or $30 fee (I've seen conflicting reports on the amount of the fee) to create a "Legacy of Service and Learning Scholarship." Thing is, the minimum requirements appear to be a 2.0 GPA and 50 hours of service a semester. Being an Eagle Scout, I'm all for service, but those requirements strike me as being way too low. That, and the lack of any description of how the scholarships will be handed out, lead me to agree with the letter to the editor in today's Daily Illini and OPPOSE the creation of this scholarship. There needs to be higher standards and a better outline of how the scholarships will be awarded for this to merit asking so much of the student body.
The second referendum is a routine re-approval of the Students for Equal Access to Learning fee, which provides need-based financial aid. I SUPPORT this referendum.
The third is a generic "sense of the student body" referendum saying that UIUC needs to make an effort to increase minority enrollment. I SUPPORT this referendum as well.
Campus elections start tomorrow, so remember to vote.
