ATTN: Daily Illini Editorial Board
I know some of you read this, so I have to wonder why, after reading my previous post on the university making us look stupid, you decided to write this:
NCAA tries to sidestep the autonomy issue by arguing that it lacks the power to make the University retire the Chief. But the NCAA's ruling will pose problems for our school which will only multiply until we comply with their implicit mandate. It's called a punishment. We're being naughty by not following the rules, so we are being punished, and we will continue to be punished until we follow the rules.
Also, since BoT Chairman Eppley has said that the university isn't going to be suing the NCAA over this, calling the NCAA's actions "unacceptable" is only so much hot air, because the only two options for the university apart from legal action are to suffer the sanctions or retire the Chief.
While I'm ranting, the reason that Notre Dame doesn't get any flak for "Fighting Irish" is that the only time people complain about the name is when they're defending Native American imagery and stereotypes. Don't believe me? NCAA President Myles Brand said as much to the Tribune a few months ago (which is behind the paywall now, so you can Lexus-Nexis it yourself).
Myself, I see no problems with the NCAA's actions in this regard. We've been bad, and we're being punished. Deal.
