(Instructor turns away from the board to look at us)

Instructor: What's going on? Why are you all smilling at me?

(Awkward pause. The instructor had made a joke a few minutes prior about mixing water and aluminum trichloride, but it's too early in the morning for any of us to remember this. Then, from a few rows back and to my left)

Student: We just love chemistry!

(Nervous laughter)

Instructor: (Pauses) That the biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard.

(Laughter, more sincere)

Instructor: Thank you for your courage.
