Waiting For More Copy
The DI finally printed its story on Sunday's nonfatal bus vw. pedestrian accident, combining it with its story on the CATS meeting on Tuesday. More thoughts when I'm not rushing off to class.
FROM THE COMMENTS: Matt had this to say, in part:
University Police Lt. Vernon G. Frost said four accidents between a bike and vehicle were reported in the University District from Oct. 18 to Oct. 20. There was also one accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Oct. 20.
Why are five incidents within three days of vehicles hitting campus people on bikes or on foot alloted a quick blurb, but an MTD bus hitting campus pedestrians is front page, headline news?
Is the local media really concerned about campus public safety, or they are more with hammering the MTD at every opportunity? Personally, I think that the local media's just buying into sensationalism, seeing that cars hit people all the time around campus, while busses hitting people is a novelty (however gruesome) that creates the disproportionate appearance of a larger problem. With the recent CUMTD/Savoy annexation battle, though, I think more than a few people are at least using the issue to, at least subconciously, advance their own support/opposition of the MTD as a whole, and that's something that all sides need to watch themselves for.
