Casualties

The Chicago Tribune and St. Louis Post-Dispatch are reporting that Daily Illini Editor-in-Chief Acton Gorton and Opinions Editor Chuck Prochaska, the two responsible for the running of the Muhammad cartoons, have been suspended pending an internal investigation. I've heard that the AP and the News-Gazette are likely to have their own coverage as well. By the balance of quotes in the articles, it looks like Acton and possibly Chuck as well were the ones who went to the press. Are they trying to turn themselves into pariahs over this? I don't think the world works quite in that way. They're the ones who screwed up - why are they drawing attention to themselves as they dig a deeper hole?
