Like The Dragnet Theme, Only With Disparaging Remarks
Our illustrious county clerk, Mark Shelden, put up a post over at illinipundit criticizing our state's Senators for not backing a law to put up "a security fence on our porous southern border." I have a few comments on this, which I'm not posting over there because it's late and I have no ambition to read the preceeding seventy-nine comments.
One, walls don't work to keep people out of a country, and anyone who thinks so is an idiot (see the history of the Great Wall of China).
Two, Mark is apparently revealing himself to be a xenophobe, since our "porous southern border" isn't the one that's a threat to national security - our northern border is.
Thirdly, if you build a wall, they're gonna use boats.
As far as I can tell, there are two reasons why the country is talking about immigration at the moment. Firstly, because Bush wants his guest worker program to be okayed, which won't happen - the Democrats know it won't be effective, while the Republican xenophobes (which comprise a large part of their southern base) won't stand for it. Secondly, the GOP needs it because without some sort of issue to stand on, they'll get hammered at the polls in November and might even get hammered with some issues to back themselves up.
While I'm not going to be as emphatically dismissive as Kiyoshi on the topic, it's all just hot air to me and the more people force me to spend time thinking about it, the more annoyed I'm going to get.
